Album Review: Ablebody Proves They Are “Adult Contemporaries”
Ablebody is comprised of LA-based identical twins Christoph and Anton Hochheim. They are an era-spanding electric duo that draw from sweet glamor of the 60’s, the soft melodies of 70s folk-pop, and the techno-sophistication of the 80’s. If this blend sounds unique, it should, and can be found in their record Adult Contemporaries. While many strike for the Woodstock, rock concert feel of these eras, Ablebody wants to bring you to the home of these music genres to create in you an adult contemporary.
There is a “home” feeling that flows throughout Adult Contemporaries. To place the album in your iPod, will feel like you are placing Vinyl in your old, record player. Moreover, you will visualize yourself lying down on a couch, with huge headphones, in a 1970’s decor living room. I cannot say I have heard too many albums that make you project yourself into a home of another era. Like my review of French Horn Rebellion, many artists aim for the concert-liveliness of an era. They want to bring you to spectacular joys of the passed time and spaces. Yet, Ablebody wants to bring the daily joys of said era, which is why they sound so romantic.
It may be hard to say that our daily routines are “romantic”. Yet, like the vision above, there is something beautiful to putting on a record, placing your headphones in your ears. and just leaving the world in song. When you let a song enrapture you, your spirit leaves the world around you to go into your imagination. This idea gives Adult Contemporaries an “adult-like” quality as even the oldest human being will take a moment of escapism, which Ablebody offers through tasty pop arrangements that a far to rich to belong to any era.
There is a playful psychedelia to this record that will make you want to try high-kicks and dance when no one is looking. We all have choreographed full-on musicals in the privacy of our home, and Adult Contemporaries reminds listeners that, no matter what, we never lose our fun imagination. Their drums, keyboard, and guitar arrangements are composed to give you a euphoric exhilaration, like the one we save for the dreams we hold.
Favorites Tracks:
Wayside Glow: Ablebody’s record proves a song can be a home for a person’s mind and spirit. Yet, in Wayside Glow, they show that a home can be haunted. The voices of Christoph and Anton Hochheim are liked a ripped pillow: soft and torn.
One Dime A Day: a symbol of techno’s sultry power. The way Christoph and Anton Hochheim blend their delicate vocals with the synthetic mist of their instrumentalsis absolutely wonderful. Yes, you want to dance to this song, but, more importantly, you want be mystified by it like you are dancing under brimming lights of pink and red.
Gaucho: one of the more playfully rock records of the album. It was a great choice as a released single because it shows Ablebody’s ability to make you want to do jumping jacks across your house. They give you an energy that puts adrenaline into your daily life.
