Album Review: Alex Lahey Is Recruiting For The Best of Luck Club
If there is one thing Alex Lahey knows, it is how to combine honesty and humor within her songwriting. The Best of Luck Club is her best record yet, in part, because it confronts a truth; success is relative, not formulaic. For a young woman, achieving “the dream” of making music for a living and growing an adoring fanbase, she has also realized they do not guarantee happiness.
I can throw every parental adage ar this record and it would stick like velcro. I am talking classics like,”Happiness is a choice!” and “Success is not defined by money.” The latter is especially true with songs such as, “Am I Doing Right?” “I Need To Move On,” and “Misery Guts,” of which Alex sings to feeling disappointed that “achieving” does not, necessarily, equate a feeling of success. As a listener, Alex’s struggle is both relevant and fascinating because we can both relate and unrelate. Most twenty-somethings still feel like they are “on their way,” but Lahey contemplates if there is ever a moment when you feel settled and safe in what you have.
Alex Lahey – Don’t Be so Hard on Yourself
From “ Interior Demeanor” to “Isabella,” Lahey has amplified her sound. This album feels louder and loftier in its angsty melodies. Alex has plugged more of her emotions into her arrangements, as much as her lyrics, and the result is an album charmed in a sentimental chaos. It may seem sad, but I love this album because it speaks to feeling lost about being lost. It is maddening to, finally, get what you want or what you think you want and still sort of empty. For this, Alex plays with her voice’s emotiveness; smoothly rasping and racking in her confusion and anger.
Alex Lahey – Don’t Be so Hard on Yourself
By the end of “I Want To Live With You,” The Best of Luck Club gains a full, weighty meaning; exemplifying how, in the end, all we can do to prepare for tomorrow is hope and wish for the best of luck today. For More Information On Alex Lahey And To Buy Best of Luck Club on May 17 Click Here.
