Album Review: Ariana Grande’s Adds “Sweetener” To Life
Ariana Grande’s Sweetener truly feels like the most “Ariana Grande album’ yet. Her previous records, though good, felt like experimentations on where to place a powerful voice. From Yours Truly to Dangerous Woman, Ariana Grande has proven she is one of the most powerful singers in the industry, and Sweetener feels like a settlement into that truth.
THE RANGE, LORD! MY GOD THAT RANGE! From “Breathin” to, of course, “God Is A Woman,” Ariana’s voice is the equivalent of a celestial spear soaring through skies to strike a target: your heart. She has been blessed with a voice that could sing the mating calls of lambs, and make it sound like a Heavenly choir. Sweetener, as an album, recognizes this. From “Better Off” to “Successful,” Ariana hits every note in her high-hitting register, and scales through it like Whitney. Floating from G to C to A octaves, as if a light switch is flickering between verses. This allows her to be emotion in and of itself.
Ariana Grande – no tears left to cry
Some people are emotive with their voice, and others are emotion such as, Ariana Grande. All she has to do is sing, and people will feel. Still, Sweetener gave her the opportunity to reveal what is in her heart: from her joy with “Pete Davidson” to her pain in “Get Well Soon.” In between rhythms that feel like they were written in The Gospel According To Pop-R&B, are verses that reveal someone whom is trying to be happy again or, at least, for the first time. There is nothing like new love and sudden tragedy to make you re-analyze how much you have been investing in yourself and the people/ things that make you happy. Thus, Sweetener is not just another good album, it also another good move.
Ariana Grande – God is a woman
“Blazed feat Pharell,” “Borderline feat. Missy Elliot,” “Sweetener, ”and “The Light Is Coming feat. Nicki Minaj” are all jams, but they are also calls for optimism, which might be why Ariana Grande’s voice seems so powerful in this record. She is, literally, being empowering. In singing about how positivity and self-healing are not just states of being but also steps to being, Ariana Grande’s Sweetener is her best record yet.
