Album Review: Betty Who Becomes Betty!

There is nothing like freeing yourself to be yourself! The biggest irony I find about life is that you need others to hurt you, but you only need yourself to heal you. It would be nice if the people that wound us could take back the hurt they gave us, but Betty Who’s new album, Betty, is all about saying, “Forget Them! Hurt people can’t heal people!”

I swear that Betty Who must have heard “I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross a million times while creating this record. It burst and brims at the rhythmic seams with an energy that tell you it is your time. The concept is naturally inviting to every listener because everyone wants their time to shine, and in tracks like, “All This Woman,” “Taste,” “Do With It,” and “Just Thought You Should Know,” Betty is shining. She is singing to owning herself, and accepting that that is a constant process. For her, the minute you are yourself, the rest of your life is about keeping you up.

Betty Who – Between You & Me

From “Old Me” to “Stop Thinking About You,” Betty’s lyrics prove an ignored truth about pop; it can be wiser and more spiritually insightful than thought. Yet, you get so caught up by the rhythms of “The One” or how lightly Betty Who’s voice flutters in “Between You & Me,” you might not capture at first listen the songs’ messaged gems. Still, that only means you should listen even more, and Betty, as an album, is worth a repeated listen. It is a succinct, pop bonanza that goes for the rises and pitfalls of loving another as you fight to always lover yourself.

Betty Who – I Remember (Official Video)

Vocally, Betty Who is a KWEEN. For this generation, a Kween is the accessible, cooler version of a queen. A woman that accepts her vulnerability as regality, of which Betty Who does. She sings her lyrics as if they are jewels she is tossing off, not only to the listener, but the haters she has called lovers. NO MORE! Betty Who is now BETTY!
