Album Review: Billy Raffoul Will See You A Few Times At The YYZ

I got the opportunity to interview Billy Raffoul on A Few Times At The YYZ, out on April 3, and well….I’m shook. This record feels pensive and beautiful like, a love story born in the warmth of a snowy cabin. You can’t help see a young couple dreaming of building a life together away from the noisy world and deep in the nature of both this earth and their love.
Billy Raffoul – Swimming In the Deep End (Official Audio)

If you read my interview, it is, basically, me asking Billy Raffoul how he observes love: seeing as he is one of my favorite singers for it. His voice is so rich, and tracks like, “In The Name of Love,” “It’s A Beautiful Life,” and “Kingston, ON” have him sounding like a bag of gems shiny, colorful, and shaped with cutting edges. The latter song he said was written for his first love, which makes me re-analyze why I even dated my first love. (lol!). He could barely pick up a can of coke from the floor: let alone a guitar. Yet, that is the whole point of Billy Raffoul’s vocal effects. He captures, in lyric and sound, women’s dream guy.
Billy Raffoul – “Without Falling in Love” (Official Video)

I have said it with Bruno Mars and even with The Weeknd, ladies LOVE a male singer the croons to desiring their beauty and pines over not having it. From ‘Without Falling In Love” to “Swimming In The Deep End,” this dynamic feels like a switch for us; with many women being trained to “wait to be chosen” by the guy. Yet, when Billy Raffoul’s voice sprouts with it earthy tones and textures, he sings to being the guy YOU, the woman, chooses. There is something powerful and romantic to that, which is why more women will be saying, “Yes, Billy, I choose you!” Add on that the record, is guided by by the sonic bond between a lovely voice and a good, guitar melody, and, of course, you want A Few More Hours At The YYZ.
