Album Review: Chelsea Cutler Observes How To Be Human
I really like Chelsea Cutler, and, similar to Conan Gray or Dodie, she has an amazing ability to make her fans feel apart of her world. She approaches them with a candor and care that makes her not only feel honest but healing. Thus, How To Be Human is aptly titled for a young woman learning to be exactly that.
There is an inherent sweetness to Cutler’s music that makes it feel happily harmless. Similar to CYN, their approach to “darker sentiments” is so light, you wonder if they define darkness like a rainbow missing a color. It would not be “off,” especially if you are a happy or positive person looking for consistency. Thus, tracks like, “You Are Losing Me,” “Strangers Again,” and “I Should Let You Go” are really about a good person realizing not everybody has his or her type of heart or “headspace.”

You ever have someone be so mean to you that you, literally, reassessed “The Human Condition?” You may giggle, but there are moments in our life where someone’s meanness can push us to redefine kindness and that same goes for love. Chelsea Cutler may be young, but tracks like “Lucky (feat. Alexander 23)” show she understands how to be treated. Frankly, I love it, and it explains why her fandom is growing. People have enough insecurities to be picking relationships, and even artists, that feed it.
Chelsea Cutler – You Are Losing Me (Lyric Video)
Sonically, How To Be Human makes you want to dance. It is electro-pop splashed with grounded vibe; completely embracing the power of a SYNTH! Chelsea uses the digitized rhythm to create a space that could turn love into an analog; codes rise up on walls as you true to figure out the right one to press enter and load a healthy romance. Add on the brightness of her voice, and How To Be Human feels like the most sparkled questioning of humanity; as if to question who you are is not so hard when you have a good song and better friends.
