Album Review: Ciaran Lavery Fights Life’s Sweet Decay

The soul is a tricky thing because you never lose it. Instead, it is divided between your spirit and your ego, of which life is a series of moments when you decide which side you wish to have your soul. In Ciaran Lavery’s Sweet Decay, (The Acoustic Sessions), the Irish singer-songwriter strips his songs to guitar basics.

I do not want to say Ciaran “redoes” his tracks because that feels to basic. Instead, it feels like he plants them in a guitar garden, and watches to see if, this time, they grow differently, of which they do. By turning down the sonic backdrop, his lyrical front becomes forwarded.  Tracks like, “Best At My Door,” “Bones 4 Blood,” and “Everything Made To Last” amp up how hard it is to crush our ego/ inner demon. While some think ego is all about arrogance, in truth, it is about cutting yourself off from genuine connection.

Love is vast because it is simple, and relationships are huge because, in truth, they are small and intimate. Lavery’s voice and verses stand out because he represents our unwillingness or hesitance to submit to life’s details because we wish every moment was legendary. Every person wants to be a myth, but how many want to simply be a person. From “Wicked Teeth” to “Morning Bell,” Lavery’s voice feels like wine splashing upon the ground; you watch as the soil of his lyrics absorb his emotions. It is a beautiful image; the wine that came from the earth, once again, being taken in by it. With each note, you feel the fruit of Levery’s labor in trying to keep his heart and head above ground so he can see the sky of love within his relationships like, “To Chicago,” “Your Artist,” and “Two Days In Savannah.”

Every human being has a moment when they do not want to invest in the betterment of their life or the joy of a moment/ person. Perhaps, our desire for disconnection comes from a belief that cannot have or are unworthy of connection. Thus, Ciaran Lavery’s Sweet Decay is highly relatable in theme, but one of a kind in how it gems these emotions into sparkling, sonic beauties.
