Album Review: Czarface And MF Doom Face- Off In Czarface Meets Metal Face
If comics could LITERALLY be transferred into sound it would be Czarface Meets Metal Face. This album is a sonic, graphic novel into what feels like the most glorious, nightmarish face-off between Czarface and MF Doom. Their names alone could be the titles of comic book villains and heroes, but their flow is pure classic Hip Hop.
Beyond its colorful soundscapes that fill in rhythms as if they were drawn cartoon figures on a page, Czarface Meets Metal Face is a celebration of the beginnings of Hip Hop; when it was just you, your talented flow, and a boom box you prayed did not start skipping beats. While, sonically, the record emanates like an audiobook for, again, a comic book film, its rhythms feel back to basics. If it were not for the skits and references to alien horrors, I would think this record, stylistically, was a greatest hits homage to the many rappers that have journeyed from bodegas to Barclays. Yet, the contrast between refreshingly vivid and classically made are what makes Czarface Meets Metal Face an album to own.
Czarface and MF Doom are legends. MF Doom’s flow could be considered alien in and of itself. It zooms and gently lands like a space-craft randomly choosing went to go on hyper-drive or park on the planet that is your mind. His capacity to go from silly to dominating is distinct, but so is Czarface. Made up of Inspectah Deck, MC Esoteric, and 7L, they have come up as music heartbeats that only deep lovers of Hip Hop know to find. Yet, despite their playful records, they do not see music as a game but as pure self-expression. Combining all their loves and interests, from The Avengers to the Apocalypse, they have shown that albums can be socially commenting by referencing what moves us as people: from simple and fun to harrowing and hurtful.
MF Doom and Czarface are two forces that have united to clash and align like a pack of characters deciphering whether they are heroes willing to use villainy to get their means or villains willing to use heroism to do it. The result is a superbly fun record, unlike ANYTHING coming out anytime soon. For More Information on Czarface and MfFDoom’s Czarface Meet Metal Face Click Here.
