Album Review: Disclosure Are Coming With The “Energy”
Forget “mood” or “vibes!” Come with the ENERGY! Mood and vibes are for aesthetics and atmosphere, but energy is for a frequency; a force so powerful it might as well be dimensional. After all, energy does not die; it transfers and transforms. With this concept, Disclosure do an overhaul of their usual, Pop spins to create “Energy;” an album that will make you vogue and strut as if the world was your runway.
RuPaul could take this record and use it to soundtrack the next season of All-Stars. The album is absolutely FABULOUS! It is more than just positive or even empowering; it is invigorating. Hence, it is aptly titled “Energy.” “My High,” “Watch Your Step,” and “Reverie” could literally morph into ballrooms. Each synth dropping like glitter from the sky to house a world of DIY attitudes, fashion, and vision. This dynamic is perfect for a duo built on the essence of DIY, at-home studios. Moreover, it guides people to the next step in the “pandemic healing and grieving process:” resilience.

Now, more than ever, people are going to be starting from scratch, and trying to gain motivation to not just better but do more for themselves. #DIY Yet, this is a dynamic that has always lived in ballroom culture because some, American communities have always lived as outcasts. Hence, a core theme throughout the record, from “Ce Nest Pas” to “Who Knew,” is boundaries, especially the ones you build when you see your dignity comes from how you treat yourself: not how others treat you. Thus, lyrics of “yes, you can” and “no, you can’t “ are being belted by the various, featured artists to symbolize that being seen as the bottom of the earth does not mean you let yourself get crushed by it.

From “Fractal” to “Lavender,” Disclosure’s Energy feels like their most purposeful album, and it is being released in an oddly, prime time. I said it in my Troye Sivan’s In A Dream review; people are feeling moody. They want to dance and be happy, but they don’t really know how with so much darkness abound. Joy can feel cheesy or like a denial of reality. Yet, the truth remains that, no matter what, you have to keep going, and Disclosure’s new album, out August 28, gives you the energy.
