Album Review: Ekali Is Taking Nightlife “A World Away”
I said it with my Temples review; there seems to be a clamor within people for a music trip; for sounds and songs that take us somewhere else! Case in point! Ekali’s A World Away arises to give us music that certainly feels like the Green Fairy was in the mixing booth.
If Moulin Rouge was located in another galaxy, I feel Ekali’s A World Away would be its soundtrack. It is romantic and starry; feeling like the love story within a fantasy novel, which is why I am super excited to see how it plays in the EDM circuit. Ekali’s debut fully embraces as part of the the dance world/rave culture that is both embraced but also guarded: it is 100% based in fantasy. Escapism is not a simple code for trying to leave your daily, but also trying to experience a new one: which might include wearing butterfly wings, putting glitter on your face, and pretending your name is Earendil, which means “sea-lover” in Elvish language. Yes, I just used a J.R.R Tolkien compliment… I am proud.
Ekali & Elohim – Fairy Tale (Official Audio)
There is a cosplay element to the EDM world, but rather then pretending we are characters from The Legend of Zelda or Harry Potter, we act like we are our own fantasy, and songs such as, “Be Fine (feat. Wafia)” and “Drown (feat. Au/Ra)” build that dynamic. Both songstresses are gaining their own strong following for their soft vocals and empowering verses, which do excellently with Ekali’s twinkling arrangements. This young man sees a synth-wave or a beat-drop like fairy-dust leaping from a wand. The sense of magic to his music pulses even in songs with no vocals such as, “Fairytale” and “Power.” Ultimately, Ekali’s album solidifies him as different form other producers/DJs by embodying the singular most important aspect to nightlife: its dreaminess.
