Album Review: Ellis Is Born Again In The Perfect Time

People are feeling really moody during this quarantine. One minute we are up and determined to FINALLY learn to crochet after years of ignoring that one ball of yarn we bought. The next we just want to stay in bed and ponder all the life choices that left us living paycheck to paycheck instead of in VAST WEALTH singing “Imagine” with Gal Gadot. Thus, Ellis’ debut album, Born Again, came out in perfect time because it is a soft, moody dive into the heart and mind of someone going through an existential crisis.

When you think of an existential crisis, you might thing of Adam Driver smashing his Kylo Ren’s helmet into a wall or envision Socrates speaking before a bunch of Greek men, in towel robes. Yet, the modern Millennial has an existential crisis, at least, twice while scrolling their Instagram feed. The “perk” of this pandemic is that now people really can’t lie about their “great life,” but Eillis’ music makes you question why you NEEDED to prove that lie was either a lie or truth. From “Shame” to “Pringle Creek” her voice is very gentle and thoughtful like a person who wants to confront their behaviors with kindness.
Ellis – All This Time

Imagine That! Imagine calling out your own BS without rage and self-loathing and, instead, kindness and understanding. From “Born Again” to “Embarrassing” or “Fall Apart” she makes uncertainty feel like another part of the mythic journey you call your life. With her guitar led melodies songs such as, “Saturn Returns” and “Into The Trees” shine her voice like the one our hear when you need a lullaby for being adult. You need a bed-time track for those 15 minutes, when you are trying to go to bed, and every thought about your days floods in to make sure you fight for your slumber. Ellis voice makes you submit and her arrangements hush you down so that you don’t fear listening to fears of unknown because …. when do you really know? Moreover, what are YOU supposed to know?
