Album Review: Emily Wells’ This World Is Too ____ For You
Emily Wells’ This World Is Too ____ For You is a gorgeous orchestration of how “too much” we can feel the world, life, or a person is within our sphere. Too kind! Too mean! Too Smart! Too horrible! “Too” is a three letter word, but it means a lot or, at least, excess. For Emily Wells, the excess of living is a reflection of the excess of feeling; the problem is that feeling too much never led anyone to feeling better or balanced.
Vocally, Wells feels like the embodiment of angelic chamber music. Her voice feels holy, succinct, and clear in her register; as if she is a none sining in the private room of Life’s Church. She might as well with songs such as, “Remind Me To Remember,” “Misconceptions On Forever,” and “Hymn For The New World.” No matter where her notes fall, she sound airy; as if her sole desire is to float deeper thoughts into your brain and make them sink in. Thus, lyrically, she has no problem adding a little sarcasm to her smarts and emotional intelligence as heard in tracks like, “Come On Doom, Let’s Party” and “Your Apocalypse Was Fab.”
For Wells, with how crazy both the world and our lives can get; acting liking misery is the good company can feel like a survival tactic. Do you ever have such a bad day that you laugh? So many things go wrong that, by the end of it, you start accepting that bad luck with a smile? From “Eulogy For The Lucky” to “I Need A Placebo” Wells, simultaneously, confronts those that live a privileged enough life to ignore others hurts while asking herself if she is ignoring hers. After all, we can only judge others as we judge ourselves. Yet, if judgement is what Wells is using, then she has turned it into an ornate, insular sound.
Sonically, it is as if she has plucked every synth rose and piano, peace lily, and held such sonic flowers delicately in her grasp. Like her voice, no matter how much she elaborate and annotates notes, they feel simple. Yet, when you consider This World Is Too ____ For You is a thought piece on life, you welcome such simplicity.
