Album Review: Emily Wells’ Is In The Dark Moving

Maybe, we have been in Quarantine for too long, BUT I am starting to feel like all releases are divided between the “get lit” vibes and “don’t judge me as I stay in bed forever” moods. While most of the album releasing were made way before the Covid-19 pandemic, sensitive times heighten people’s awareness. Suddenly, light seems lighter and darkness appears darker. With that in mind, Emily Wells’ new album, In The Dark Moving, sound like black veils hanging over stars; it is beautifully grim, which means you have to be ready for its ride.
Emily Wells – “Remind Me To Remember (Minimal Recording)” – Official Audio w/ lyrics

With songs such as, “Come On Doom, Let’s Party,” “Eulogy For The Lucky,” “You’re Apocalypse Was Fab,” and “I Need A Placebo,” Emily Wells comes off like a broken heart strumming single  chord melodies and lighting cigarettes in hell. Yet, for her, hell is not all fire and brimstone or, at least, that is not its scariest part. Instead, it is a place filled with dark rooms where all your most depressing thoughts are displayed before you through a projector. The result is an album that capture the haunting nature of loneliness and feeling so insecure you don’t even want to try to connect, while still managing to observe and know others are not connecting genuinely.
Emily Wells – “Misconceptions on Forever (Minimal Recording)” – Official Audio w/ lyrics

Wells drizzles and drips through her range to become the voice of every lonely girl at the party; the one watching people who, you know hate each other, become the funnest frenemies. Authenticity is a BIG WORD many repeat and believe in, but, lyrically, Well’s observes what that means and whether it can signify ANYTHING when you are craving and judging the world. Thus, her vocals swish and which like white flags to the wind; pure and signifying surrender. It is captivating to hear, but, again, it is particular step into a dark wonder. Thus, I recommend this album for a broken heart looking to heart its own hopes and heartaches through his or her headphones. Emily Wells’ Is In The Dark Moving comes out May 15, Click Here To Buy!
