Album Review: Ezza Rose Declares “No Means No”

Ezza Rose has a voice that makes you float through clouds. She simply lifts you up, and takes you to the sky just as the sun is rising. There you see dawning clouds dance in colors of purple and orange, which are both shades tied to prosperity. In No Means No, Ezza sings the beauty of a dawn that has yet to rise: respect for every voice.

As a woman, Ezza Rose understands what it is to have your very meaning as a human being consistently ignored, questioned, or degraded. “No Means No” will appeal to ladies, but also to everyone who has felt their intentions and affirmations were diminished because their voice was considered invaluable. Thus, Rose’s plush, satin vocality feels righteous in delivering a simple message: respect. There is no excuse to not act in virtue, especially ones like ignorance or inequality. Sonically, tracks like, “Circles,” “Baby, Come Down,”and “Sorry Isn’t Good Enough” make you feel like a 1950’s housewife delicately dancing in the dreams and disappointments of being so much more than her role for others.

It is crazy to live in a world the makes you completely responsible for the wrongs done unto you and the wrongs people to do to themselves. Women certainly feel this perplexing cruelty in these Kavanaugh Times, where we can be invaded emotionally and physically and then told, “She is just mixed up.” Yet, lyrically, Ezza Rose discusses the clarity we carry, as the supporting characters of mens’ stories, by having a hushing range that sings to how much we know about ourselves, about our men, and about our world. Yet, we keep it all quiet. This explains why this record’s surreal soundscapes break out into raucous melodies such as in, “No Means No” and “American Man.” Sometimes, women need to break their silence over how men turn up the noise in their life.
