Album Review: Fenne Lily Scopes Through Her Life While “On Hold”
What I LOVE about Fenne’s Lily as a lyricist is that she never loses her power in situations. From her dreams to her relationships, she maintains ownership of her heart even if they prod her to react. In life you never lose your “power” or your self; you simply give it away. In On Hold, Fenne Lily puts a sonic pause on her life to analyze why she has chosen let others make her feel weak or place herself in situations where she would be a lesser version of herself.
Fenne Lily – On Hold
Maybe, it is because I watched John Legend’s Jesus Christ Superstar (lol!), but I kept on thinking of the line “HEAL YOURSELVES!” when I heard Fenne Lily’s spritz her vocals like perfume dancing with air during tracks “The Hand You Deal”, “Brother”, and “Bud”. When it comes to healing yourself, you have to realize that, even in others’ worst, you are still in charge of your best. This is not easy when your boyfriend is breaking up with you, your boss is mistreating you, and your parents are asking you, on loop, “What are you doing with your life?” Fenne Lily’s voice wafts through these scenarios to revive you with a clarifying, flowery message; others can hurt you, but only you can heal yourself.
Fenne Lily – Three Oh Nine
I said it with Hinds’ I Don’t Run album, which also comes out this week, and I will say it with Fenne Lily’s On Hold; this is a delightfully easy listen. Though they are socially and thematically different, they only ask listeners to press play and be willing to ride. From “More Than You Know” to “Top to Toe”, Fenne Lily uses her acoustics and guitar to softly enclave listeners; so that they realize they are apart of her empowerment but she empowers herself. Fans make an artist successful, but music makes an artist artful. In essence, you feel like you are Fenne Lily trying to embrace how you hurt yourself, but you know that you are you when it comes to time to rebuild yourself.
