Album Review: Frances Cone Dawn In Late Riser
A good harmony never fails to make you feel surrounded by magic, and Frances Cone bring on the harmonies in new album Late Riser, which comes out January 18. Sonically, this record feels like a ballerina dancing through the desert; building a folk legend through the beauty and movement of humanity. Yet, when you are sining to holding unto love, such an image feels right.
Nothing like romance to make you feel like grace sifting through sand. Frances Cone’s Late Riser certainly feels like dawn throughout tracks such as, “Easy Love,” “Failure”,and ‘Wide Awake.” Yet, the sun is rising on truths or, at least, the moment that we need to accept that have not been accepting it. From Unraveling” to “Waterline,” Christina Cone and Andrew Doherty’s voices feel sewn together to make a scarf of warm, textured vocality. Cone’s voice feels like a spiritual synth; waving through tracks while Doherty’s vocals fog like humidity over their windowed lyrics. Beautifully, when their vocals unite, they sound practically androgynous.
Frances Cone creates genderless harmonies that could only be describes as thoughtful and thought- provoking. This highlights how, lyrically, Late Riser is like having a morning after days of night. It truly has Frances Cone singing to the realization that you can only avoid an epiphany for so long. Eventually, you have to analyze your goals, your love life, your dreams, and your persona for what they signify to you and this world. Thus, from “Arizona” to “All For The Best,” every key and chord feel stepped like, that ballerina in the desert. Each footing of a rhythm feeling paced and precise to assure that the music supports their voice.
At times, a sonic backdrop can dominate or overtake an artist’s voice and lyrical gravitas, but Frances Cone assure their sounds are a platform for their voices. They want to shine and they do. Hence, Late Riser is a record you play when you want to think upon the routines of your life. Whether you are driving to work or cooking the same dinner, Frances Cone are the artist you play when you want to plug in deeper thoughts to your automatic choices.
