Album Review: Gus Dapperton Releases The “Orca”

UGH! I LOVED GUS DAPPERTON’S ORCA! It was like skipping down a hill with Jack And Jill on a peyote trip: it was empowering, slightly psychedelic, and totally living in the childhood fantasies of getting older. Let’s be honest! 2020 is not the year for any young person to feel “young.” Of course, we are, but even babies are getting grey hairs from the stress. Yet, Dapperton delivers an album that make hope feel digestible.

Gus Dapperton – Post Humorous (Official Music Video)

Yes, I said “digestible.” Sometimes, too much joy makes me recoil. Growing up, while people admired Hannah Montana and Alex from Wizards of Waverly, I was more fascinated by Wednesday from the Addams Family. She felt real (lol!) Yet, Gus Dapperton reveals that optimism isn’t always about saying or believing life is great. Instead, it is about the drive you keep to actually make it so. From “Grim” To “Bluebird,” his chords feel subtly revved like they are really a car lightly speeding to make it home. The sentiment makes the entire album flow like a literal vibe. Gus Dapperton – Medicine (Official Audio)

From harmonies to backdrop vocals or melodies that feel like they are angels singing, Orca feels hymnal. It’s chorally exuberant in message and sound as if Dapperton arranged for a batch of twenty-somethings to sing on a cloud about their internal battles with disillusion and hope. Tomorrow is coming, and tracks like, “Medicine” and “Bottle Opener” make you feel more emotionally prepared for it. While I always loved Dapperton’s work, Orca is by far the best of it.
