Album Review: Jade Bird Shows “Something American” To Her Heart
Something American is Jade Bird’s dedicated EP to the picturesque ideas of American life and relationships. In these crazy times, it is getting harder to recall the American Dream, and how it sparkled based on the idea of an aspect to humanity that is pure and unabashedly love. Thus, as an Upstate New York native, Bird sings to the green valleys and bluesy hills of America.
First, I have to declare that the success of this EP rides on Bird’s simple, euphoric voice. Even in songs, “Cathedral” and “What Am I Here For”, where she plays to the heartbreak and confusion her decisions have caused, she sings as if her eyes can only see from a rosed hue. There is always something bright about her voice and how she uses it with confidence. Whether she is acting wrong or right or feels wrong or right, she pulses forward in vocals and guitar to display her heart, which is very American. No matter what, our heart is on our sleeve, and songs such as “Something American”, “Good Woman”, and “Grinnin On Your Face” show that for however much we put on a “poker face”, our cards are laid out. The inherent vulnerability of her lyrics comes from the natural openness of Bird’s personality. As a child she traveled a lot and used her new homes and family hiccups as constant inspiration for her poetry. In some ways, she has been writing about American life and relationships longer than some politicians have served. It is that level of human observance that gives Something American a folkish, but youthful vibe. Yes, she is still young, but wisdom has no age. For Jade Bird, whether she acquires the best of her dreams, lovers, experiences, and friends comes from how much wisdom she acquires, as well.
