Album Review: Justus Profitt And Jay Som Sing To “Nothing’s Changed”

We all have looked at our life and said, “Nothing’s Changed!” Justus Profitt and Jay Som have united their voices in creating an album that is both titled and encompassing of that phrase. Nothing’s Changed is a 5 track shoulder for you to lay your head, take a breath, and be okay with the fact that everything is just “okay.”

We have highs and we have lows, but, most of the time, we have plateaus; life scapes that feel steady, still, and hard to not see as boring. Unfortunately, life is not Adventure Time, but Justus Profitt and Jay Som are singing like Finn and Marceline doing a duet. You can see clouds and funny creatures colorfully passing through their voices to build a world that feels crossed between the inner child we carry and the actual adult we are. In life, there has to be space where both can live, and “Nothing’s Changed” is about finding that space.

Sometimes, I wonder if boredom is simply our inner kid clamoring for us to stop with “all the routines,” and find friends to go outside and play. “Invisible Friends,” “My World My Rules,” and “Grow” seem to share the same idea. Lyrically, they ponder how we acquire the power to make life feel like a spark even when there are no “fires burning.” Sure, you may not be rich and famous, your relationship is going through a temporary dud, and your friends are moving on to their own existential crises, but must we think about these things ALL THE TIME? Can’t a Friday night have a Friday feeling?

Nothing’s Changed is the perfect “press play” record. It fits right into the moments when you do not know what song you want to hear, or what mood you are in/ want to be in because that is what “Nothing’s Changed,” as a phrase, means: I don’t know what I am to get out of life and I don’t know how to feel about what I have. By using their guitars and keys to make melodies latch to moodiness, I can, certainly, live with Justus Profitt and Jay Som uniting again.
