Album Review: Kate Bollinger Shows “a word becomes a sound”
Listening to Kate Bollinger’s a word becomes a sound, I kept on thinking of those 70’s films where the young girl puts her vinyl record player and sage on and proceeds to lie in bed and stare at the ceiling. To some, that sounds like the explanation of what is boredom, but to people like me, we understand that that is how we “peace out, ” and Kate Bollinger’s EP totally peaces you out.
I find my chill with a good song, a sweet scent, and the absolute permission I give a soundscape to become a dreamscape. Kate Bollinger’s EP is the kind of album that makes you lie down and listen, of which we all need that record. I have the artists I listen to when I don’t to work, the ones I pop on when I want to feel like doing a chore is the equivalent to holding a revival, and the artists I listen to when I really need to mentally drift. It was a topic I discussed in my recent interview with Skrizzly Adams: the struggle to detach versus the the struggle to distract.
Kate Bollinger – Feel Like Doing Nothing (Official Video)
We all need to distract ourselves sometimes, but what does it mean to detach? For me and Skrizzly, it was the need to emotionally distance yourself from problems that don’t, necessary, have a resolution as much a destination; you don’t solve them, you get through them. Listening to tracks like, “Gray Skies,” “Queen To Nobody,” and “Feel Like Doing Nothing” completely encompass that vibe. Sometimes, the only way to escape a problem is through your mind, which is why distraction is of moderate value and music provides it. Sonically, a word becomes a sound feels like a paced groove; as if Kate has slowed down and relaxed rhythms that would, otherwise, make your body dance to make your brain move instead.
Kate Bollinger – Grey Skies (Visualizer)
Vocally, Kate’s voice feels like a hush in a crowded theater. Suddenly, all the voices in your head get quiet because her film has begun, and it reels like a French “coming of age’ movie where a teenage girl goes to her aunt’s summer villa and discovers herself with local friends and a cute, Noah Centineo lookalike. Yes, I have watched too many movies and remember too many basic plot-lines, but Kate’s EP reminds me that a simple plot lives through its details, and the same thing goes for life. Kate Bollinger’s a word becomes a sound comes out August 21. Click Here For More Information.
