Album Review: Kero Kero Bonito Build A Neon World In “Civilisation II”
I swear when I hear Kero Kero Bonito, I imagine Sailor Moon pregaming with the Sailor gals for a night of clubbing. Their new EP, Civilisation II, feels like the hyper-pop glory we desire from a night out in a neon city. It blooms with a giddy brightness that is not for everyone lacking a sweet tooth.
I remember interviewing CYN, and she recalled the strange irony of feeling isolated as an artist because she was “too happy,” which is why Civilisation II is so particularly delightful. There are those who will listen to it and say, “Get this joy out of here!” At only three tracks, it is hard not to feel by the end of “Well-Rested” that you have not become a full cartoon in Adventure Time. Yet, that level of casual vibrancy is what makes Kero Kero Bonito’s rise so unstoppable.
There are many more, than what is said, who wish to feel that colorful. Who wouldn’t like to be lead in an anime, a funny character on Adult Swim, or, for once, be in a banal, Nickelodeon series? Something about a life drawn can feel safer and funner than a life lived. Inspired by cherry-picked pieces of technology and the endless vista of the internet, Sarah Midori’s voice sounds like a digitized fantasy; guiding you through the shapes and colors of living your days like dreams.
