Album Review: Le Ren Gives Morning & Melancholia
If Patsy Cline recorded an EP from waterfall in Heaven, you would get Le Ren’s Morning & Melancholia: out July 31. It is that ripe blend of “happy/sad” that people adore in their music; mixed in with a undercurrents of country folk music and ambient soundscapes. The result is a four song EP that drop on you like the last raindrops of a cloudy day.

I don’t know about you, but I love grey days. I love the smell of grass during the rain, and looking at the sky hue with a perfect balance of day and night; as if the sun and moon agreed to share morning hours. With this concept, Le Ren flourishes the “happy/sad” dynamic that enthralls people. For some reason, we love that emotional inbetween like a grey day. A sunny day is too much pressure for us to “live it up” and the dark night can get pretty sad. Something about a space that only asks us to settle into it, like grey, makes us put our guard down enough to feel what we want rather than what we think we need to feel, which is what tracks like, “Love Can’t Be The Only Reason To Stay” and “The Day I Lose My Mind” feel based.

Vocally, Le Ren is rising in a time of simple voice. Women with breathy vocals that ebb and flow in their range to emanate “feeling” is a light experience. It is a beautiful idea when you realize that even our darkest feelings are born from ur dreams like, “If I Had Wings.” We all want go somewhere else to be a better version of us, but until then, we have our “morning and melancholia” to get us by.
