Album Review: Lukas Graham Grows Up In 3 (The Purple Album)
Lukas Graham’s 3 (The Purple Album) is his most mature record yet. If his previous ones were about a young guy trying to find his way, this album felt written by a young man that has found it or, at least, the path to it. In life, we will take many journey, and, when you realize that, you gain the wisdom it takes to course them.
In a world that talks about “finding yourself” and “finding your path,” Lukas Graham’s 3 arises to tall us you never stop looking for it. “Your path” constantly changes to become an endless road surprise routes and life-altering detours. Yet, the maturity of Lukas as a vocalist and lyricist comes in his eased and growing acceptance of this truth. Tracks like, “Redemption,” “Everything That Isn’t Me,” and “Hold My Hand” have Lukas unabashedly vulnerable. He is looking to open to others hearts, and acknowledge that, though we do not, technically, need anyone; it sure is nice to have someone. Thus, his lyrics stick upon you like bandages across your heart’s scratches and wounds, and Graham’s voice is the medicine you take to feel less pain.

From “Lullaby” to “Promise,” Graham’s maturity also comes with a tenderness; as if growing up also means being open. Thought he still steamrolls verses with spoken-word/rap style rapidity, this album carries a slight “preacher” quality. He even has a church ballad, “Say Yes.” Spiritually, the album is a step further into Lukas Graham’s consistent aim to make people feel like phoenixes rising from ashes. It is a quality he has, consistently, had to show through his own life, and, throughout 3 (The Purple Album), you feel the open performer is, finally, doing so more in record. This explains why songs such as “Love Someone” and “Unhappy” have an acoustic softness to them. This “go around” Graham is not aiming to rile souls as much as rise them.

Sonically, 3 (The Purple Album) aims more for the piano ballads and intimate, guitar melodies that make you feels like the quieter you get, the more excited you feel. It may not seem like an obvious affect, but when you stop trying to figure how to react to life, you start to absorb it. Hence, Lukas Graham’s record simply asks you to lean into its heart, and, from there, lean into your own. For More Information on Lukas Graham And To Buy 3 (The Purple Album) on October 26 Click Here.
