Album Review: Molly Burch Is Sullen Heroine Of Lost Love For Brooklyn

Molly Burch played The Bell House continuing her tour for Please Be Mine. An album that came out on Valentine’s Day, which is perfect for Burch’s sound and persona as a hopeless romantic. Providing another solid performance, there was one thing that I noticed that made all the difference compared to last time I saw her at Union Pool; she performed more without her guitar.

Something about seeing Burch, whose voice is one of the best to rise in 2017, emanated as she, without her guitar, invested her body more in her songs. From a slight tussle of her hand or hair, to keeling over as if love’s desire was so much within her that it left her bent, the longing and leaving of hope in her music was sincerely felt. In my previous Molly Burch concert, I felt the yearning and beauty of her music, but the loss of the guitar brought the desperation for love that turned her performance into a scene from a film. As her lover walks away or says “It Is Over”, you felt as if Molly broke out into songs “Down-hearted” and “Fool”. When Burch plays the guitar, naturally, she is focused on multiple instruments, which does not take away from her performance but makes it different. It is as if with the guitar, you admire her musicianship, but without it, you admire her sentimentality. Suddenly, she goes beyond singer to actress, and becomes a staple for audience members of every moment they felt “the one” slip away.

Burch’s album is a mutual celebration and mourning of love. Last Night at The Bell House, in a quiet, cool bar-lounge in Brooklyn, Burch came off like a film protagonist that walked on stage to let go of some woes. It was truly cinematic because it was emotional. Moreover, it is proof of something body- linguists discuss all the time; one move can say more than what you think. By letting go of the guitar, for a few more songs, you just saw Molly’s voice and her heart play, which turned her into the sullen heroine of lost love. For More Information On Molly Burch Click Here.
