Album Review: Muna Saves The World
Muna’s “Saves The World” actually does sound like “salvation.” It is moody and contemplative, while still managing to feel commercial and energetically pop. It makes you want put a sundress and dance in a field of daisies under a burning sky. What an image! Yet, faith in the face of another dark turn can feel like that. Whether you are on your third break-up or third job in just 3 years, life can feel like a puzzle you were told was easier to figure out but never given all the pieces. Muna has them.
Listening to the simple, pop jam, “It’s Gonna Be Okay” was really fun and beautiful because hearing Naomi McPherson repeat those words felt right. It was, exactly, what I or anyone would need to hear when they need a spiritual “pick me up.” The same thing goes for songs such as, “Good News (Ya-Ya Song),” “Grow,” and “Memento” which do not have Muna running from life’s confusions and disappointments. Yet. this is a really cheery album; it makes doubt feel like the beginning of an adventure, which, from a perspective, it can be. Every adventure, whether it be to another location or to your heart, starts with a questioning of life and what it really means to you in the moment.
Blessed with a voice that feels sweetly uncomplicated. She builds her lyrics like a map to what it is to not feel like you are unproblematic. Again, the record sounds happy with clapping synths and chords that roll like candy crush. Imagine that! Life feeling like a giant candy crush game that you are, actually, crushing. Welp! that is not a feeling you will have very often in life, but, at least, Muna’s Saves The World makes you okay with that. To buy the album Click Here.
