Album Review: Parcels Are The Bee Gees of 2018
Parcels are The Beach Boys/ The Bee Gees of 2018; giving you a SoCal groove that turns beachfronts into disco floors. Their self-titled debut is the epitome of “feel-good,” and makes you want to walk through your day and night as if your very touch light up the sky.Yet, do not be fooled by those that believe an “easy listen” is a lesser one; these Byron Bay guys have created an electro-soundscape that makes complexity feels like simplicity.
Throughout Parcels’ record, waves of digitization and acoustics swaddle each other as if to create a blanket over listeners’ ears. This blanket is imprinted with the thoughts and feelings of these harmonious singers: chilled with verses feeling sketched and woven by every person that gets in their head when someone gets into their heart. Similar to Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, Parcels’ share a “John Lennon quality” to their vocals that allow them to sweetly skate the intricacies of thinking through your emotions.

“Yourfault,” “bemyself,” and “withorwithout” are just a few examples of when their vocality meets every synth, snare, key, and baseline behind them to form a near interplanetary union, which is what our feelings, when coming together, can feel like. Imagine it! All the planets aligning in the same way that Parcels have written their titles: like a straight, synchronized, and uninterrupted thought such as, “comedown,” “lightenup,” and “closetowhy.” I love that they did this because, again, our thoughts are like streamers being tossed over and over again upon the our mind’s tree; coloring our nature with unnatural tapestry. Such a remark also exemplifies Parcels extremely cool sound.

I know that this is an “album review,” and “cool” may seem like a cheap word, but it is not an easy feat. Trends are tricksters, and attempting to make something that goes beyond genre or generation is incredibly hard. Yet, Parcels self-titled album combines retro and futurism to build a present sound. Moreover, you could live in the breeze of their harmonies. From “Tape” to “Exotica,” you feel as if their melodies pick you up like wind does a leaf, and twirl you into the air until you remember that a good song can make your spirit fly.
