Album Review: Pet Symmetry Show “Vision”
Pet Symmetry continue their “tongue in cheek” humor in second album Vision. These guys approach music like a batch of kids hopped up on Mountain Dew (Ricky Bobby Reference). Like sugared children, their lyricism and instrumentals splash around with a spontaneous, near combustible energy. Hence, their sophomore album’s title, Vision, is a befitting. Nothing like pure, fun childlike energy to spark your imagination.
Pet Symmetry’s known good humor comes in part from their sporadic, even fantastical lyricism. They approach verses like a person does their thoughts; one word triggers a thousand images and connections that are not always fluid, but are always fascinating. “Stare Collection”, “You & Me & Mt.Hood”, “Lint Roller” are just a few tracks that have thoughts, themes, and words that fierily shoot above like fireworks. Pet Symmetry’s rambunctious nature comes from their unfiltered dive into the uncharted parts of their imagination. They are dreamy, not in romanticism, but in their raucous nature, of which “St. John”, “Eye Sores”, and “Hall Monitor” show the links between rebelliousness and dreaminess. Usually, when you chose not to conform to rules or relationships, it is because you are stuck on a vision that is more appealing to or positive to you. Thus, Vision is another indie-punk step in Pet Symmetry’s exemplifying of youthful resistance. Who dreams more than the young, and who is more rebellious?
From revolutions to bar brawls, when you try to find the sources for a stir, you will probably find a young person. With chords, drums, and keys that cannot shake a feeling of riotousness, Pet Symmetry are sonic symbols that “Everyone, If Anyone” can cause a fire, but will they blaze or burn? Lead singer Evan Weiss is a good vocal charge with a voice that can incite volatility, “Blue Water”, or pensiveness “Mostly Water”. Yet, no matter in snark or seriousness, he and fellow bandmates Erik Czaja and Marcus Nuccio never lose their playfulness, and show that revolting youth is a fueled cause far from boring.
