Album Review: Protoje Is In Search of Lost Time
As a Caribbean gal, I have to say Reggae is MY VIBE. It is a spiritual frequency that reverbs within my heart to remind me that I need to relax. The irony of Reggae is that it is known for being chill and political, which are NOT two things you would associate with the other. Yet, the magic of Reggae, and artists like Protoje, is that they embrace darkness with such lightness that it motivates you to handle it. You are never going to heal a wound with a weapon, but, luckily, music is a tool, and Protoje’s In Search of Lost Time rebuilds your spirit.
Protoje – A Vibe (Visualizer) ft. Wiz Khalifa
Sonically, what can I say? Do you love Reggae? Well then, In Search of Lost Time, out August 28, embraces the pace and purpose of a good Reggae beat: rhythmic enough to make you relax your mind and swish those hips. Vocally, Protoje has a unique “innocence.” Whether singing or rapping, his voice has a honeydew quality like a man that never gets angry: just disappointed. You may laugh, but isn’t that the dream; to reach a level of personal peace that helps you help the world but also guards from its hurt. Thus, whether he is a seducing a woman or pleading for society to love itself, every song carries a softness and intimacy.
Protoje – Like Royalty (Official Video) ft. Popcaan
“Still I Wonder,” “Weed & Ting,” and ‘Deliverance” are just a few examples of Protoje’s ultimate message: we are better together. Laughs are shared, love is between people, and weed, well, maybe he will pass it around a few times. The point is the best of life ism usually, experienced with someone by your side, and In Search of Lost Time lives up to this truth; with Protoje singing to his hope that together we can all get back lost time.
