Album Review: Rejjie Snow Shows You The Musical Connection Between “The Moon & You”

Did you know that nearly every Disney film was based of the The Brothers Grimm tales? Our childhood memories and moral stories were, basically, fashioned by tales that were more horrifying than empowering. I mention this because there is a twisted fantasy element to Rejjie Snow’s The Moon & You that makes him come off like The Grimm Rapper.
Rejjie Snow – PURPLE TUESDAY (feat. Joey Bada$$ & Jesse Boykins III) (Official Audio)

Instrumentally, The Moon & You is visionary. Songs like, “Fashion Show”, “Mama Africa”, and “Acid Trip” inevitably pull you to parts of your imagination that are more vivd and creative, in comparison, to their daily usage. You cannot help but dream twisted and tantalizing images in songs, “Pink Flower” and “Me & My Piano”. Snow has no problem scoping through genres like one would an attic filled with memorabilia. He will go from jazz boxes to rock n’ roll ones just to snatch the trinketed beats that can be worth a secret million. The result is an unwavering, surreal mindfulness casting upon listeners. From beginning to end, you have fallen into a Hip Hop rabbit-hole that feels like psychedelic rock has been replaced by psychedelic rap. I over-elaborate the amazingness of this mix-tape’s sonics because without it, you could not treasure the straight heaviness of Snow’s vocals.

Snow drops into his raps as if every word had a sack of bricks tied to it. The result is an intriguing contrast to vibrant arrangements that trail behind him in songs, “Sunny California” and “Get It”. He has a deep but fluid voice that makes his flows, using the brick analogy, pile in structure and purpose. He is building a connection to the listeners of who will avidly follow him from social ladders to relationship climbs. Having such a magnifying even magical rhythms as his backdrop coolly etches Rejjie Snow’s voice as one to listen and, eventually, watch on tour.
