Album Review: Sebastian Blanck Asks Life To “Convince Me” It Is Worth Living
Renowned painter and musician Sebastian Blanck releases his newest album, Convince Me; a spry, florid record that might as well be music painting upon you. It flows with a flowery ease as if Blanck brushed and stroked every note and lyric with a vision. From love to listlessness, Convince Me has Blanck asking life to convince him why it is so worth living?
We have all looked at the stars or streets and wondered, “What is “this” all about? And why should I be apart of “it”? “This” and “it” are ambiguous terms that we, as human beings, somehow know encompasses everything. The universe is a big place and we are small factors trying to feel like a huge part of it. “Vanishing Point”, “Among The Ones You Love”, and “Denial” frame the internal struggle to grasp life as a gentle force when it can feel imprisoning. It is daunting to know how beyond love and all of life’s factors are from your control, which is why Blanck, at times, may feel convicted to life rather convinced by it. When you do not have control or a feeling of being in charge of your life, “this” and “it” embody how unknown and heavy life feels. Blanck sings tracks like, “Entanglement” and “No Choice” with a straight sadness. He captures the hopelessness that everyone simply carries within them as they go to the grocery store, take the train to work, or have a walk around the park. There is a mundaneness to gloom that can stick to people even in their “happiest” instances and stay with them in their most routine. For this, Blanck uses guitar melodies that are casually bright to move forward lyrics that are casually blued. For however, small, or rather less, we feel in this world, we still have to live in it, and Convince Me is the veiled attempt/ acceptance that if you are going to keep waking up everyday, you have to, eventually, figure out to be less anxious about it. Using rhythms that counter melancholy with a calm glow, Blanck’s Convince Me might be the sweetest way to deal with life’s sour ways.
