Album Review: Snny Celebrates Nostalgia In Otito

An electronic fusion of pop, hip-hop, and R&B, snny’s Otito is an EP that embodies a classic, New York Summer. It busts and buzzes with sounds across the world to produce an electric vibe. With New York undergoing one of its darkest times, Otito feels like a reminder of what our normal used to be. New York has always been the most terrifying place for the fearless; a city that attracts the boldest, most innovative thinkers and challenges them until they see whether or not they are as unlimited and strong as they thought. Yet, in the fight of The City VS Otito, the latter wins!

snny – Somewhere in Brooklyn (lyric video)

snny really does feel Sunny in every way. He scorches through his lyrics as if passion burns his tongue, but it is not just the passion of desire for another person. It is the “joie de vivre,” and the feeling that life is something to be consumed. Songs such as, “Pink Lemonade” and “Somewhere In Brooklyn,” certainly, carry this vibe, and you eat it up because, in these times, we need that. We need to remember celebration to know that, when we have them again the can be even bigger. Thus, from “Abidjan” to “Sideways,” Otito makes you want to ride your bike through the city, breathe in the sunny air, and properly social distance as you yell out “Life is GOOD!” Yet, that doesn’t mean the album does not embraces sadness.

Nostalgia and anxiety seem to be key themes no matter which artist. I know I mention that a lot, but it is a big deal. In a world that feels like FEELINGS are everywhere, for better or worse, it is nice to have artists, like Snny, that want people to embrace sadness with a kick-drum beat. For him, like the new show Betty, you go through trials, but you skate through joy. For More Information Snny’s Otito, out May 8.
