Album Review: Talos Observe The “Far Out Dust”
Life is a strange thing because it is something we simply have until we “don’t.” No one asks for our consent to be alive, and it is not like there is an HR department that can resolve all our grievances every time “Life” throws us a curveball. For Talos, Far Out Dust is the album that happens when you start asking yourself what “living” means to you.
There comes a point in every life, or at least there should be, when you start asking yourself what is happiness, strength, peace, and human connection. Basically, you challenge the definitions of these ambiguous terms you are supposed to have, but Talos aims to revamp them so as to gain them. Tracks like, “Boy I Was Wrong,” “See Me,” “The Light Upon Us,” and “Let Go” brim with nostalgia and self-discovery. He sings his verses like a man looking at his life as if it is a rich novel, and he is its enraptured reader.
At least once, everyone thinks their life is a book or a movie, and from “Dawn, The Front” to “To Each His Own,” Talos might as well win the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. His instrumentals and vocality feel framed within Ireland’s gorgeous, green landscapes. His capacity to turn a melody into a vivid nature is beautiful and his voice esteems for its higher range. Frankly, he sounds like an angel, which I know is a common compliment, but you cannot listen to “2AM” and “In The Fold” and not think Talos is angelic. His higher register alters what it means to embrace and feel excited that your old wounds are healing and your gnawing doubts are clearing.
Far Out Dust is a refreshing record both sonically and spiritually because it is based in simplicity. It arrangements feel made of painted oils, and its verses the figures coming to life as Talos realizes his life is art. It is a gorgeous notion to think your days on this earth are a masterpiece to be witnessed, but the wisdom of Talos is his epiphany that he should be his first, happy viewer.
