Album Review: Unfortunately, Terror Jr. Is So Fortunately Good
Unfortunately, Terror Jr. is ANYTHING BUT! With EPs under their belt that were, literally, called Bop City, there were high expectations for Terror Jr’s debut. With heavy basslines moonwalking through tracks, this album is a reminder that music should make you feel like the center of the universe.
Nowadays, I swear I hear people say, everyday, “Why is everything so negative or rather political?” It is hard to find spaces, even in the arts, that can make you feel deliciously and guiltlessly invincible because, as human beings, we talk about our surroundings and hide our fantasies. In Unfortunately, Terror Jr, the duo blend fantasy with the misfortune of heartbreak. Sonically, they make you feel like you are the Hammer of Thor incarnate wearing some FIERCE, red bottoms. Yet, this would not be possible without David Singer Vine’s penchant for sultrily dramatic productions, and Lisa Vitale’s hummingbird vocality.
From “Maker” to “Pretty,” Vitale’s voice feels succulently airy; as if she is gracefully absorbing the honey of her verses and they have left her humming with emotions. She feels light, breezy, and gigantically small. Her capacity to feel intimate but massively drawn comes from lyrics that are all about wanting to feel sexy while feeling disappointed. Upon reading, you might not understand the perspective, but I KNOW you have felt it. There are moments when you wish you felt 100% “you” again and desired the finer things in life/from yourself that you once called routine. The problem is heartbreak really does break you, and “Isolation,” “Kinda Iconic,” “Terrified,” and “Losers R Lovers” toy with a heart “yo-yoing” between ferocity and fear.
Sonically, this album was MADE for you to dance, twerk, and sashay. You cannot resist songs such as “Yamaguchi” and “Favorite Bitch” when it comes to making you feel like you are voguing on the set of Pose. Yet, it is their ability to draw upon darker sentiments and make them feel like Instagram filters you can swipe away that makes their music feel like NOW.
