Album Review: Tori Kelly Embraces Solitude

Let’s be frank! We are ALL having an existential crisis in this pandemic; realizing just how frail and inaccessible our lives have been or can be. We find ourselves not only alone, but thinking of things in ways we never did: from the world to our future/ ourselves. It is hard not fall down some serious, mental rabbit holes, if you truly think of what is happening in this pandemic/ the aftermath, but you still need to have hope. Hence, Tori Kelly’s Solitude, out August 14, feels like a love letter she sent to fans that says, “You are never alone if you have yourself.”

Written in quarantine, Solitude is really about its title. In just five tracks, Kelly sings to the quiet moments of reflection that can either lead to enlightenment or crushing darkness. Some days you wake up swearing you are going to pick up French, and, other days, you are lucky if you even feel like talking. Somehow, Tori Kelly has managed how to put how confused, “happy/sad” we all can feel, and make a beautiful EP that is so succinct and sweet, it begs to be replayed.
Tori Kelly – Unbothered (Lyric Video)

First, let me just say, Tori Kelly’s voice can turn milk into chocolate milk with just one riff; she just ADDS THE FLAVOR! She doesn’t sing a song, she transforms it into a daily anthem; the tracks you put on when you need to remember you do have value beyond your exes, jobs, and unfinished dreams. Life, in general, is an unfinished dream, which is why living is the dream, and Tori Kelly serves fantasies with songs such as, “Value” and “Unbothered.” The irony is that this pandemic-born EP serves some of Tori Kelly’s BEST work: both vocally and sonically.
Tori Kelly – Time Flies (Visualizer)

The pandemic is changing the industry and artists in terms of marketing, creating, and, heck, even surviving. It is for this reason that many people have, somehow, found themselves getting clearer in this pandemic; having a vision and just going for it. For Tori Kelly’s Solitude, she had a simple vision: sing and empower. You can tell that the songs are from her heart and flow effortlessly, which is why they are so magnetic. In these times, people want to feel simpler, and Tori’s talent and genius is in connecting simplicity with empowerment. We all just want feel good and know that we are good enough to feel it.
