Album Review: Twin Shadow Makes You “Caer” Into His Music
If you ask the genre of Twin Shadow, a.k.a George Lewis Jr, he will say “Listen”. After listening to his newest record, Caer, I understand why. A genre would be too confining to what Twin Shadow aims to do, which is to make you listen to his music like one would bite a fruit; you desire the juice of it to enter your taste and transform what was plain into magical.
With a name like Twin Shadow, I was surprised by how light Caer played. Even the title, Caer, means to fall in Spanish. Yet, let us not forget that as you fall, for a minute, you are in air. Technically, to fall from the sky involves you soaring through it, which is an underscoring theme in tracks like, “Brace”, “Sympathy”, and “When You’re Wrong”. Twin Shadow is observing the rises before the falls of relationships, dreams, and his own faith in himself and the world. It seems obvious that the only way to heal yourself is to see how you hurt yourself, but humanity only presumes that logic pertains to physical wounds. Yet, Caer, adapts that mindset into music meant to observe your spiritual hurts with scintillating beats.
Twin Shadow – Brace
Similar to L.A. Salami, Twin Shadow is not afraid of the spoken word or getting strangely poetical in how he vapes his verses like mist over the sun. His voice feels bright as it smokily scopes his emotional lyrics, which gives his album an “electro-pop” friendliness, but a moodiness saved for genres like soul. Still, even then, I do not want to bask him with specific genres because a disco vibe can be heard in “Too Many Colors” or a folksy-blues in “Rust”. Yet, no matter what, Twin Shadow encapsulates his doubts with candied arrangements to make tracks like, “Runaway” and “Littlest Things”, feel like lollipops holding a chewable center of thoughts. From “Saturdays” to “Obvious People”, Twin Shadow’s Caer is a weird but charming adventure.
