Artist Close-Up: Cifika Brings The Meekness of Fierceness

K-POP has struggled to make it in America to the perplexing of many. Some theorize racism as a reason, while others presume it is people’s lack of desire to hear a song in another language they do not understand. Yet, Despacito proved that latter theory can struggle. Ultimately, one of the biggest, billion-dollar music industries is struggling in one of the most powerful ones.Yet, Cifika is trying to bridge that gap by serving K-POP sensibilities with thoughtful, English lyrics.

When I hear K-POP I feel like someone is making cake-batter and frosting for my ears. It is 100% happy music, but Cifika adds lo-fi, R&B elements to make sure this sonic bounce-house rolls smoothly. You feel like a kid jumping up and down with a bunch of others kids, but this time no one is pushing. Hence, Cifika is making sonic miracles that ignite your energy without making you feel exhausted by euphoria.

The reason we crash after a club night is because we go from the tiring work-force into a surreal, adrenaline induced dance-fest. Yet, Cifika’s voice is too light and flossy for you to get mindlessly blissful. She compels you to listen to her insightful, yet simple lyrics on keeping herself awake enough to not sleep on good love opportunities. “Best For You” , “Water”, and “Prosper” have her voice blending with an ethereal “house” back-drop that leaves you moving through the dance-floor as if they were made from clouds. Personally, I really Cifika’s sound and feel she exudes the meekness of fierceness; you do not need to be loud in words to be heard, but you have to be loud in statement.
