Artist Close-Up: Joywave Show Relationships Can Be A Trip

Part fun and part confrontational, Joywave is the kind of artist that I enjoy. They make music that instrumentally spikes up and down like a heart monitor, while lyrically creating verses that flesh the heart’s troubles. Their newest songs, “It’s A Trip”, is as fun as the jet skis they ride, but their words do have real depth like, the ocean, and turn the video from a vibrant ride to a visceral one.
Joywave – It’s A Trip! (Official Video)

So many songs are about the many moments, in life, when we have no clue what we want from it. We know we want “something”, but ask us to describe it in a speech or text, and, suddenly, we drop down to kindergarten levels of expression. Yet, Joywave’s “It’s A Trip” can also be seen from the perspective of waiting for your partner to, hopefully, see that he or she wants you. As the the band ages from bright, young men riding with beautiful women to basic skeletons still riding with beautiful women. The video is a twisted symbol for feeling dried by a relationship that has taken all the flesh from you, and now feels as dusty as a sack of bones. Thus, leave it to Joywave to make a song that easily presses play to our emotional confusions, while being wavy and brisk in composition. Its guitar melodies have a mystery-noir feel that seems found by the dark bass and drums. All these arrangements conjoin, to give lead singer Daniel Armbruster a vocal platform to ooze the draining exhausting feeling of giving the world to someone, and still feeling like they are in another emotional planet.

Armbruster’s voice is as succinct as it is distinct. He is sentimentally clear with “fluffing” up notes to push the lyrical rawness of being used. I like a voice that naturally emanates meaning and Armbruster has it. Thus, “It’s A Trip” is another addictively creative step for this rousingly acclaimed band.
