Artists of 2019: Jess Connelly Tells Love “Don’t Play”
Jess Connelly’s sound makes me want to bebop my way through life. I, literally, want to pull out a piece of card-board, and start breakdancing at my bus stop when I hear her tracks such as, “Process” and “Don’t Play.” For this rising songstress, empowerment is fun.
We feel our best when we are having fun. Confidence and joy go hand in hand, and, for JCON, this is truth to represented in swag, style, and message. Her songs feel like swagger itself, which is why her lyrics pop like champagne bubbles for saying a basic truth: if your lover does not make you feel loved then it is time to bounce. This may not seem like rocket science but, from “Fool4u” to “Wasting,” Jess is singing to real truths; we can wait way too long for “our partner” to get their s**z together, and, in turn, we end up losing ours.
If your relationship is an exchange of stability, where you find yourself insecure for “your partner’s” security, then get you JCON music out and dance away. Vocally, her voice is similar to the many pop-R&B songstresses splashing Hip Hop baselines into their sound such as, Ella Mai and H.E.R. The result is a music that feels saccharinely heavy, contagiously rhythmic, and surprisingly telling on what it takes to return to joy after loving someone that made you miserable.
