Artists of 2019: whenyoung Are Going Big For The New Year
whenyoung are crossing the pond to give us their their take on what is “Given Up.” The Irish trio is tapping into a music market of young, fresh-faced philosophers trying to figure out why rising generations can feel so old. By 25, most of us feel like we have been through a lifetime of heartaches and disappointments interspersed between bursts of light-hearted fun. whenyoung are capturing both those energies in 2019.
Frankly, I thought whenyoung’s cover of “Dreams” was the most beautiful, honoring one to this track, and embodies a trope that every generation must face: reality. What you want and what you get, usually, do not match, but, somehow, whenyoung are creating the pop that makes you settled in such a notion. Their beats feels twinkled, puffed, and glistened; as if you could buffer a rhythm to glow in the same way you do a car. Moreover, Aoife Power’s voice is so succinct and saccharine. She makes a verse as easy and as delightful as a walk in the park.
From “Pretty Pure” to “Collector,” whenyoung are making pop hits that are memorable, swift, and sweetly nostalgic. They are bringing a 90’s/80’s aesthetic with a Millennial vibe that proves retro will always be a thing because certain qualities, as situations, never get old; they simply get refreshed.
