Comic Book Review: Skin And Earth Shows The Divide Between Rich And Poor
I interviewed Lights awhile back, and we connected on our mutual love for comic-books. I even encouraged her to release one. Now, I am not saying my encouragement pushed her, but now she has a comic book. Skin & Earth follows En Jin in a post-apocalyptic world that is divided between the rich and poor…. sound familiar?

The first issue for a comic is never the favorite, despite always being a classic. Nobody cites the first issue of Superman as their favorite one, but it is the beginning of their favor for the character, which is why it becomes a treasure. I say this because Skin And Earth 1 and 2 capture that balance. You are meeting En Jin and world, and getting sparked to see what went so wrong that now, the world is divided between The Pink Sector and The Red Sector; the rich, whom accumulate everything that makes them numb or look good, at the expense of the poor whom are literally treated like walking toxins. It is clear that Lights is creating a comic book series of brazened social commentary. She is NOT a fan of the “richies” that take from working class pockets and dignity to, ironically, not feel.

What I found most curious about Skin And Earth’s beginning is that its focuses on setting, and uses that to draw a following. Your mind, naturally, assumes something is going to happen where our heroine will have to “kick-butt”. Yet, its beginning, at least for now, is about dividing two worlds between “the haves and have nots”. The haves may have every material expense, but she elaborated their struggle for love in details of their surroundings that you, the reader, have to catch by observing the back-drops of the character. Through En Jin, as she transitions form Pink Sector World to Red Sector, emotions run higher for better or worse because when you take people things…. they have a feeling about it. I am, definitely, excited to see the relationship (love?) between En Jin and Priest unfold, and am curious as to how Lights explains how everything got so dark that people would hurt and allow only a few to live so lavishly while others live so desperately.
