Concert Review: AJ Mitchell Is Pop’s Future At Gramercy Theatre

I would NOT be surprised if AJ Mitchell sells out MSG like Shawn Mendes or Justin Bieber. He has an angelic voice that makes young girls feel like they can live in their own, Nicola Yoon novel. Sometimes, I wonder, especially with teen artists, why people/ young girls are so fascinated by them. At Gramercy Theatre, for much of the youthful crowd, AJ Mitchell was their first crush.

Maybe, it was the avid cheering at Mitchell’s every move and breathe, but it hit me that artists like, AJ, Shawn, and Justin complete a lot of firsts for young, girl fans. They are their first choice ever in what music they want to hear, their first person they thought of romantically, and their first time dreaming of their future. There is such a beauty in that, especially as someone way over their firsts or their “fantasizing” phase. AJ represents and sings to the moments in your life when you genuinely thought you could win and never imagined a lot of adversity. Ugh! Where are those days?!!!!!!!!!

AJ Mitchell – All My Friends

As AJ sang tracks like, “Used To Be,” “All My Friends,” and “Girls” he epitomized the fantasy factory that is pop. He felt produced by every iconic star before him; even wearing the “all white” get up that originated in Backstreet Boys fames video, “I Want It That Way.” Yet, his verses totally appeal to the simple desire we all have to sing to love as if its majesty was chewable; hence, bubblegum pop. What is so great about AJ Mitchell’s music is that, a few verses in, and you are singing along like nothing. Thus, his performance felt, naturally, inclusive and starry.

AJ Mitchell – Used To Be [Official Video]

As I go from concert to concert, I am becoming convinced that people just want to sing along (lol!). It might be a simple goal, but it seems like a main one; to enter a mass group of people, sing full-voice (and slightly off-pitch), and feel like you are a apart of a movement, even if it is solely based on one person. Pop stars, in their own way, are an investment. From BTS to Ariana Grande, you see droves of people obsessed with encouraging and pushing forward these individuals as if there is only one ticket left to Mars, and we have chosen them to be safe. As the crowd looked upon AJ, he was going to Mars, and he had the boyish charm, the coy playfulness, and rich, R &B-esque voice to be sent off. For More information On AJ Mitchell Click Here.
