Concert Review: The Amazons Are Defiant At Mercury Lounge
When it comes to The Amazons, their fans approach them like the literal incarnation of Defiance. Four guys not taking BS anymore ; defenders of youth and their right and rightful voice. Obviously, it is a refreshing take; a group of people that believe that youth are smart, strong, and willing to be both things for the future. Honestly, have you heard such compliments aimed at Millennials? At Mercury Lounge, The Amazons created a space that made even the hardest heart go all Stuart Smalley to declare, “I’m Good Enough! I’m Smart Enough! And God Darn It! People Like Me!”

Sometimes, I forget how affirming rock and punk are to listeners. We assume they are pure noise igniting chaos moshing, which it is, but it also a validation to listeners that life can be horrible but you are not. This was especially felt as The Amazons played from their newest album, Future, of which lead singer Matt spoke on how it was written FOR THE YOUTH! For them, to feel like they had an album/ music that does not lessen their power. This only ignited the crowd further; pumping an energy that, if bottled, would explode. It was succinctly frenetic; like an atom going haywire within water, Yes, it is supposed to make something hydrating and smooth, but, sometimes, it is not easy to make what is expected of you. For The Amazons, to many people except the youth and struggling to be nothing and quiet.
Rock N’ Roll was MADE to make noise. Since its conception, it was to show high society submission is not an option, of which tracks like, “Doubt It,” “25,” and “Mother” said that. There was no tracks that did not, in some way, comment on the future while acknowledging those trying to make it better in the present: whether in their personal life or societal aim. Coming from the UK, the birthplace of Te Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Sex Pistols, The Amazons felt in good company for their goals: good music and invigorating people.
