Concert Review: Anemone Are Psychedelically Perfect At Baby’s All Right

Anemone prove why a live concert is so important. Like with most psychedelic artists, you need to see their show to capture how vast their music is in experience. In headphones, I felt like Anemone was a beach run through my daydreams, but, in their concert at Baby’s, they were the night coming to life.

Similar to Parcels or Tame Impala, Anemone’s music is WAY more groovier when live. People were sliding and “cowboy be-bopping” as if work the next day, which was amazing. If you make you audience forget time and duty to give into now and dancing, you are doing a great job, of which lead singer Chloé did. There is a “follow the leader” quality to her presence as she shimmies her shoulders, swings her hair, and “smizes” at the crowd as if to say, “Aren’t you going to dance?” Of course, you did, because a good personality makes you want to better yours.

Playing off their new record, Beat My Distance, again, I was surprised by danceable their songs were. Chloé’s voice was like syrup over pancaking acoustics, while her verses were like hooks making us the fish baiting into them. Yet, the most exceptional part of Anemone’s show is how they let the music play. Once they hit that special, rhythmic arrangement that makes you wish life had a rewind button, they figuratively say, “Don’t worry we have a loop!” Suddenly, a beat repeats itself until you feel like you are living eternally in a vibe; a frequency that is delightfully delirious and dazzling. THIS IS WHAT PSYCHEDELIA IS ALL ABOUT!

Anemone were perfect at Baby’s All Right! I said what I said! The Montreal band were inviting in presence, but focused enough in style to realize that, as psychedelic artists, there music is like a drug; you let your audience ride off into their imagination, and check up on them to make sure their comfortable.
