Concert Review/ Artist Close-Up: Ashe Is Too Kind To Be True
Blessed with a voice that could, actually, compete with Adele or Amy Winehouse, Ashe seems like the last girl you would think is a “powerhouse” vocalist. Why? Because when we think of ladies with a voices that could shake the earth for its resources, we think “serious” or even “tragic.” For some reason, attributing friendliness and joy to power is not easy for people, but that is what Ashe was when presenting her debut EP, Rabbit Hole, at City Winery’s The Loft.
Trust me! It was not the wine making people tipsy. It was Ashe’s ability to scale her vocal chords as if she was a human xylophone. I studied opera, and the way she jumped those octaves could have been considered vocally Olympic. From “Choirs” to “Sometimes, People Suck,” she sang to something we all need to have for ourselves: compassion.
Ashe – Choirs
I often say it; happiness is not easy to acquire. It comes from within, and how kind you are to yourself moves how happy you will be with yourself. In a way, it makes sense. When we want to make others happy or feel loved… what do we do? We act kindly towards them. Thus, it was rejuvenating hearing this rich voice that could, easily, slide into the jazz era of Ms. Holiday sing to loving yourself, saying goodbye to those that don’t love you, and having a good time all the way.
From “Real Love” to “We Get High,” Ashe would sing, and then she would have us all rolling with her joviality and silliness. She is such a kind person herself; eager to laugh at a moment, especially one as nerve-inducing as performing in front of others. From her honey-badger poses to lovingly making fun of her guitarist, she made everyone want her to succeed. People think every kind person is successful, and every creative genius is a good heart, but lovingness is not a requirement for either. Thus, when it happens, you want to cheer because, most of us, understand that not every good heart is lucky enough to get noted as a talent, but Ashe is and you cane learn more about her HERE.
