Concert Review: Beach House Put Me In An Emotional Limbo At King’s Theatre

Beach House gave a mystifying show, at King’s Theatre, that explained why they are the anti-thesis of mainstream. While most radio hits go for the depression or bliss of life, Beach House go for the emotional limbo; the place in our soul that does not feel right, but does not feel wrong.

There is something devastatingly exciting abut being in an emotional limbo; we are mutually hopeful for Heaven and threatened by hell. With this mind-frame Beach House’s music feels like symphonic chaos. You are warped through craters and constellations, which is why their backdrops can go from images of stars to pictures of sparking flames. Their melodies cusp your mind to hypnotize you, of which watching a SOLD OUT crowd sway and tap their feet in harmony was glorious. We were all matching in sentiment and synchrony with Victoria Legrand  Alex Scally’s vocals.

To create a soundscape that builds itself like a kingdom is not easy, but Beach House’s Legrand and Scally do it so softly. Their voices are like needles in haystacks; silver and piercing amongst rhythms that pile in layered earthiness. You gravitate towards tracks like, “Elegy To The Void,” “Levitation,” “Home Again,” and “Myth” because they represent that gnawing pit in your stomach claiming there is “somewhere/ something else” that can fulfill us more than what we have. Dissatisfaction is common, but their art shows it is a universal battle, which makes their music feel bigger. Moreover, despite the magnificent images splashing behind them, the show is very dimly lit. From “Drunk In LA” to “Dive,” their music is about dancing and hugging your shadows until you feel light again. Thus, a dark room was a beautiful, smart choice for an enlightening experience.

I cannot get enough of Beach House’s vocality and the richness of their sound in concert. Their show is like a musical drug that sends you on a spiritual trip, of which you confront the aspect of you that is divine amongst the human. It is a deep, thoughtful experience delivered by two people that simply stand still and play. For Beach House, their music is the magician, and they are merely their to assure the spell is cast.
