Concert Review: Becky Hill Turns The House In BK
House MUSIC WILL RETURN, BISHES! Becky Hill feels like tip of the iceberg in what will be a total resurge of 90s house, electro-dance, and just the general vibe the synths are to be surfed. When it comes to 90s music, it is not always as appreciated or sampled, as the 70s or 80s. Yet, the 90s, for the states/ the world, was the last decade everyone had hope that this place called earth would not end up singed by our hands. It was an exuberantly dramatic and fabulous era, and Becky Hill matched that energy at Brooklyn Steel.
Becky Hill came out like a Baz Luhrmann film, and I am talking Moulin Rouge/ Romeo and Juliet. Between her glittery fit and the lighting, she radiated that Young Hearts Run Free scene from the famous film: where every Capulet and Montague danced with each other, under drugs and masks, completely forgetting that by day they hate each other. See that is the magic of a Becky Hill Show…. Forgetting.
I have always remarked on the sweet irony of the New York City concert scene. It is the liveliest one in the world, but lies on a belly of pressure to make a night out be ALL OUT. Doing this for years, I’ve seen people breakdown in tears, give up their rent to see an artist, or decide their partner or job is worth quitting, all while an artist jammed through their setlist. I mention that because even the greatest concert might not be able to erase what we face beyond its doors. but Becky Hill does.
She has a cool, dangerous aura like, that friend that really would encourage you to burn your exes house down, but then stop you and say just key his car. You know…. balance. Yet, its her way to casually peruse the stage belting out songs that are all powerhouses. ¨Disconnect,¨ Äfterglow,¨ and ¨Remember¨ all feel like in baseline alone they built the island of Ibiza, they serve such a decadence that you immerse in the moment and mentally understand that any BS would be disservice to what Becky Hill is offering: a chance to happily forget.
