Concert Review: BIA IS MY BORICUA At Pier 17

Opening for Don Toliver’s tour is not easy. Don Toliver fans see him like a god. He is unique and delivers songs that slap hard but sing gently. Thus, even at three hours away from performing, they were calling out his name, as if to summon him like a genie. I set up the scenario because it is never easy to be the before when everyone is overly excited for the after. It is like being a Six Flags a mile away from Disney World; while the former has the craziest rides you’ll ever go on but people are READY for that Magic Kingdom. Yet, BIA had the magic, and it NOT to be ignored or underestimated at Pier 17.

With orange lighting and a crew of dancers decked in white sweatsuits, BIA shook her body and the ground as if to become a human earthquake. She entered the stage as if gasoline pumps through her body more than blood, which means she was revved up. It was exciting and memorable because, again, it is not easy to introduce yourself to a crowd that is waiting to greet someone else. It is the equivalent to trying to hold a sincere conversation with someone whose looking around the room to see if their friend or someone more interesting has arrived; every word you say dropping to their feet as their eyes keep looking away. Yet, BIA hyped that crowd up and commanded them to look only at her and they did.

With camera lights up and twerks abound, BIA’s tracks such as, “Besito” and “Skate,” entered them like a shot of Pitorro (Puerto Rican Moonshine and the best thing, in my humble opinion, to get LIT!)”  If sound could make you drunk and someone’s verses could enter your veins to influence you then BIA achieved this. She cosmically had more energy than a crowd that felt as dominant and energized as a sea of rockets shooting to the sky, which is why her only option was to be the moon. Luckily, she has the songs that will define your night. For More Information ON BIA Click Here.
