Concert Review: Big Wild Is The Beyonce of DJ’s
DJ’s have become lucrative in the music industry, where to stand means you are really something special. Big Wild does not just stand out, he stands up from the rest. He might be the first DJ you will ever see that gives a performance beyond the mix-table.
At sight, he is a tall kid with Jesus-like hair and thick-rimmed glasses. He enters the stage humbly, and gives a few thanks to everyone for their support. Something he does often throughout his act that is notable because it is the only time he interrupts his own music. Moments of gratefulness are acts of kindness that are not lost to me. In fact, I find them endearing in artists, and a key way to elevate the openness of an audience’s energy. Of course, you want to support a “good guy,” but the minute his beats drop, you see he is a brilliant one. From his gratitude comes your own at hearing sounds so unique and danceable you feel like an “extra” on a Step Up film. As I looked at the crowd, I saw everyone dancing as freely as one dances in the privacy of their home. That liberation of closing your eyes and letting the music move you rather than trying to move to the music is the gift Big Wild give his audience. The beats dare you to not try a move you have never done before. From twerks to twirls, Big Wild offers mixes that prove music is a freeing force; no shame, just fun.
It is hard to describe Big Wild’s sound, which is part of his talent. On his Facebook, he says his genre is everything and it is. From Caribbean tropical beats to African tribal music to electronic pop, you don’t know where the next rhythm will lead but you know that you will follow. It is hard not to want to enter the world Big Wild’s music and he, himself, build. He is so instantly dynamic, he feels like a rocket blasting into your atmosphere. He mouths the lyrics of songs as if it were his soul doing the singing and dances across the stage like the music is, literally, coming out of him. He closes his eyes and mixes every sound as if it were a spirit with a story. It is rare to see a DJ be a performer, but Big Wild is a show in himself. When he brings out his bongos, he looks like a mad genius relieving the images of his mind. I say images because from the films playing behind his tracks, you see that Big Wild does not just listen to music, he sees it.
Big Wild is a fun visionary. His tracks might as well come in the form of bright colors because they stream before your brain to paint joy. He is certainly a DJ to both listen to and see because, again, he does not just mix but masters the set and stage. You want to join him in the pleasure of his music, and exult how nice it is to see talent humbly recognize its own skills. Moreover, Big Wild shares his music with a love that will continue to bind him to success.
