Concert Review: binki Is Our Harry Potter At Prospect Park
Honestly, now is the perfect time to be a new artist. People are beyond eager to invest and connect with someone or something, which felt like a reality in 2019 but an overt-must in 2021. As I saw binki do magic tricks and move as if an invisible Geppetto was was pulling his body to swing and dance across the stage, the crowd went wild. They were seemingly enraptured by his cool, internet meme swag.
With a literal, retro computer pop-up as his backdrop, binki seemingly embodied everything Gen-Z adores about the past: its colorfulness, its boldness, and shape-shifting nature. There is something boisterous about 90s/80 culture that we try to replicate in our own current, music sphere. He just felt so lax and embracing; reminding of NYC nightlife. He is the guy in front of Mercury Lounge cracking all the jokes as his friends surround him and wait to give their ID’s. Thus, his music feels like the cool commentary and silly puns you would hear as you overhear “that friend.”
If you read me often, you know I think the “friend quality” is one of the most important for a rising artist. It is a “vibe” that makes them emanate and connect with every individual of a crowd as if we all were going to join them, after, to wait in line and get into a bar together. That casual electricity is why everyone was unsurprised by little moments like, his Harry Potter gush-fest where he did magic tricks. Binki’s ability to make “nerdiness” cool is 100% with the times. Think about it! If Revenge of The Nerds was an 80s classic about computer geeks into comics and magic getting revenge on dull frat boys, the modern take would make the dull frat boy, in some ways, “the nerd” and, the comic-lovers, the popular kids.
Saying you are un-intrigued by the color, humor, and overall magic of life does NOT make you the hero of 2021 film, even though it could in 1981. Perhaps, that is why retro is about plucking from the past what we like, and binki plucks the patterns and party ambiance that make us all VERY INTO our college-dorm themed parties. (Jersey Shore being a particular fave!) Overall, in sound and personality, he felt like a giant win, which may sound corny. Yet, in a year, where more people need a friend, it is really good that his music sounds like one. For More Information On binki Click Here.
