Concert Review: Blac Rabbit Serve A Trip To Mercury Lounge

Never underestimate where people are going. From up to down, life is a journey that no one can  tell for the other; let alone for themselves. Whether you believe in fate, choice, or both, there is an unshakeable feeling of unpredictability to life, and Blac Rabbit represented that at Mercury Lounge.

From “Seize The Day” to “All Good,” if the only thing about life is that there is no guarantee, Blac Rabbit ask you to use that as freedom. In essence, if you do not know what is to be written for you, then enjoy inventing your story. Such positivity feels right for a group that is known for their awesome Beatles covers/ live medleys, and marks Unknown Mortal Orchestra as an inspiration. In a way, they feel like a combination of both; ranging their rock from psychedelic to pop, and fusing both styles to give you a saccharine trip. Even their “hardest” tracks are really about keeping you soft to life’s opportunities, which is why I like them.

Maybe it is the new year, but I am LOOKING FOR OPTIMISM, PEOPLE! What is “trippy” about Blac Rabbit is that their psych-rock gives it. Not many turn to psychedelic rock to boost their positivity. Yes, this genre can make you feel lighter and elevated, but it seems too rich in depth and philosophy to give you a plain, good vibe. Songs such as “All Good” and “Mindspace” did exactly that, and represented what makes Blac Rabbit stand out as a group: clarity. They have taken the imaginativeness of psych-rock and moshed its raucousness with a concise benevolence that matches Rahiem Taylor and Amiri Taylor’s voices and personalities.

I love when people feel non-malicious; as if there is not one negative or harmful bone in their body. Such a dynamic plays into the Taylor twin’s harmonies, and how their voices blend like vanilla and caramel forming an even sweeter, sugary dose. Thus, their clear, kind voices transform their psychedelia into a nice vision; matching the swirling, swishing colors lighting behind them in their backdrop.
